It is so very hard to watch these darlings grow up only to lose them later.  After losing Buck-ee, my husband kind of lost his heart for deer raising but then when he got back from hunting, he found one of our buck fawns laying dead farther back in the enclosure.   We had one that was sickly early on but has held his own but this one was a nice big and seemingly healthy boy which really made my husband question whether or not to continue.   I told him that you have to expect losses but also learn from them.  His deer farm buddies just shrug and say it's all part of the process and that deer FIND reasons to die but I disagree.  I took the 6 mth old up to MSU diagnostics for a necropsy.  It is better to find out a specific reason rather than to play guessing games and hopefully prevent further unnecessary deaths.   I know that others who have lousy housing for their animals have high losses but we have one of the better areas conducive to raising good healthy deer so we are going to do everything possible to protect and learn from our herd.
