More heartaches at Romeacres. My dear whitetail doe, Sally is not doing so well. We sedated her yesterday to draw blood to tak up to MSU since the necropsy on the doe that died showed nothing that contributed to her death other than the fact that she starved to death by not being able to absorb her food. Sally and Chance are doing the same. We are praying that they do not find Johnney's Disease (yo-nnies) as it is non treatable and we will have to kill all those affected and keep running blood tests on everyone else for years to come. If this is the case, it will devastate our herd and we don't think we will be able to continue. The expense of trying to do everything just right within the Cervidae herd and the kennel is just getting to be too much and our hearts are breaking as we love the deer and dogs and love to do everything possible to give them the best health. Deer are hard to treat because they are by nature "wild" and darting them on a daily basis is not economical nor safe for their well being. Running them through a system of "shoots" can be just as stressful and you wonder if God really meant man to manage such a species but unfortunately, there will come a time when ranches such as these will be the only place to find them;0( The shoot system is a better way to go, especially when they are used to going through at which you can keep one open at all times where they can wonder in and out at will. It is all in how they are managed. We do not have one but have wanted one, just very expensive and not in our reach right now.
Will post when we know more on the blood tests at MSU.
The fawn gets his splint off today;0) I know that they will want to x-ray but that is not feasible as I have Ella at the other vet getting her teeth cleaned. At least I can charge that one for now....*sigh*
